Getting To Know: Cherry Hills Golf & Lodge

An Insightful Interview With Jon Martell, General Manager

By Brian Weis

Whether you have played a course 20+ times a year or looking to play the course for the first time, insights from an insider can help enhance your golf experience. Below is an interview with Jon Martell who shares some valuable tidbits about the course, memorable holes and must eats and treats at the 19th.

Give Our Readers An Overview of the Golf Course/Property
Cherry Hills is a beautiful natural setting for golf with rolling terrain and exceptional views. The layout provides a fun challenge for skilled players as well as ample forgiveness for recreational golfers. The lodge is situated in a grandstand style, hovering over the 9th green, and every room has a patio or balcony that looks out over the golf course.

If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course?
The convenience of being able to walk right out of your room to the golf course is a favorite quality of many of our guests. The good course conditions, convenient location, and great rates also make Cherry Hills the best value in Door County.

What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
Straighter is better than longer!

Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course? We are most proud of the recovery that Cherry Hills has made after several years of neglect. The progress and improvement have happened in a short period of time and we constantly receive great feedback from players who have returned. We look forward to continuing the improvements to make Cherry Hills a favorite Door County golf destination.

What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
Hole 15 is affectionately known as the "Cliff Hole" where golfers must keep their tee shot short of a cliff at the edge of the fairway. Once players arrive to their tee shot they are greeted with an amazing panoramic vista of the Door County countryside. During the Fall Colors the view is absolutely breathtaking.

What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
Number 15- "Cliff Hole" because of the view and the demanding shots it requires. Aim for the left side of the fairway off the tee and make sure to club down two clubs on your approach to offset the downhill.

Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
If you play on a Friday, stick around for the Perch Fry!

Who Holds Course Record and What Was Their Score?

In his adult years, his passion for the game collided with his entrepreneurial spirit and in 2004 launched GolfWisconsin.com. In 2007, the idea for a network of local golf directory sites formed and GolfTrips.com was born. Today, the network consists of a site in all 50 states supported by national sites like GolfTrips.com, GolfGuide.com and GolfPackages.com. It is an understatement to say, Brian is passionate about promoting golf and golf travel on a local, regional, national and international level.
