Golf Guide: Vail - CO
The bustling resort city of Vail bears little resemblance to the undeveloped sheep-grazing land on which it was built. But the blank canvas that Vail was built on allowed developers to plan the city meticulously and incorporate design elements borrowed from Zermatt, Switzerland. The from-scratch layout of Vail benefits tourists who visit this gorgeous town, because unless they feel compelled to do so, they don't have to use their cars to get around.
The country's largest free transportation system allows travelers to frequent the world-class restaurants, the vibrant bars and the posh shops in Lionshead, Vail Village and Golden Peak, the three base areas that grant access to what made Vail Vail: the mountain.
Yes, Vail is first and foremost a skiing destination, and anyone who has negotiated Giant Steps or kicked up powder in one of Vail's famous Back Bowls will concur that the skiing is truly epic on this expansive mountain.
Yet many tourists prefer Vail when it doesn't sport snow. The terrain that provides so many wintertime thrills also delivers adventures on bikes, on horseback and to those visitors wearing hiking boots. And if sore muscles need to be soothed, after a day of fly fishing, for example, travelers can have their stress and aches removed in any of nine Vail spas, one of which, Arrabelle's RockResorts Spa, features 10,000 square feet in which to pamper its guests.
When it's time to grip it and rip it, golfers can choose from an impressive range of courses, some of them designed by such luminaries of the game as Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Tom Fazio and Robert Trent Jones Jr. Of course, the benefits of hitting the ball a long way through the thin air at high altitude exist at all the area's courses, and the scenic beauty that pervades these courses will make every birdie sing much more sweetly.
