Since the Nebraska Golf Trail features only three courses, some golfers may not bother to seek them out, since more popular courses exist in the region and people may think that three courses does not a trail make. They would be oh-so-wrong.
The 10th hole at Iron Horse Golf Club alone is worth the trip to Ashland. The course hop-scotches an old rock quarry, and many of the holes are forgiving off the tee, but the 10th requires nerves of steel and lazar-like accuracy. If golfers like their courses to have more bite, they should head just down the road to Quarry Oaks, which consistently rates the best in the state. The par-3s are particularly memorable. Rolling bentgrass fairways wend their way through wetlands and thickets of pines at Woodland Hills Golf Club, which also has earned tremendous golf honors and awards.
