Butch Harmon - About Golf

By John Ehle

Butch Harmon's 2 DVD instructional videos is a comprehensive program that covers every aspect of the game, including a segment on anger management. Harmon's suggestion is to limit your anger to however long it takes you to walk 10 yards. Good advice.

The instruction is direct, simple, and the teaching is excellent. Harmon's delivery is never abstract or jargon-laced and the videography is sophisticated. The use of close-up shots is employed in every segment and picture-within-picture is used to vary angles which inform the concept being offered. Harmon has scripted these videos for every level of golfer with special sections which are directed at kids, women and seniors.

While this form of direct instruction is sometimes criticized because it precludes interaction between teacher and pupil, Harmon's style is clearly delivered with the anticipation of student questions in mind. This is a rich, vibrant program which is best taken in small doses as the intent is to use the program as a tutorial and punctuated by practice sessions to ground the concepts. I found it to be very helpful to take my laptop to the range and pause the video as I practiced the concepts. A little geeky, I admit, but keep in mind Ben Hogan's reflection on the benefits of hard work; "The more I practice, the luckier I get".
