Getting To Know: Bucks Run Golf Club
An Insightful Interview With Jon Conklin, PGA Head Pro
By Brian Weis
Whether you have played a course 20+ times a year or looking to play the course for the first time, insights from an insider can help enhance your golf experience. Below is an interview with Jon Conklin who shares some valuable tidbits about the course, memorable holes and must eats and treats at the 19th.
Give Our Readers An Overview of the Golf Course/Property
Bucks Run Golf Club is Mid-Michigan's premier golfing location. Located in Mt. Pleasant, MI, our course features an award-winning, Jerry Matthew's layout, featuring natural wetlands, river frontage, and picturesque lakes coming into play on numerous holes. The course hosts beautifully sculpted tees and fairways, soft sand bunkers, and playable rough. Without a doubt, we guarantee that you will find Bucks Run to be a challenging, but enjoyable experience.
If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course?
Bucks Run Golf Club is one of Jerry Matthew's greatest designs. The course scenery is relaxing and beautiful - winding around Lake Fisher, the Chippewa River, and several natural wetlands. Our greens are fast and healthy, and we pay attention to even the slightest details in maintaining the look and condition of the course. Our Course Superintendent currently maintains a weekly blog at www.bucksrunturf.com, which explains all the things done to keep our course in such good shape. It's a great read!
We also pride ourselves in customer service. You can be guaranteed when you first arrive at our course, you will be greeted by a member of our friendly staff, who will be eager to help you with your clubs and get you ready for your round. Also, our close proximity to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, and other local hotels, make our course the perfect place to set-up a play and stay weekend.
What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
Before setting out and beginning your round, I would suggest warming up on the range, and taking time to practice on the putting green before playing. This will help you to get a better feel for the greens and their speed. Distance off the tee is not everything; accuracy will make your round memorable.
Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course?
We have continued to win a variety of local, state, and national awards since our opening in 2000. Every year since 2001, we have received 4.5 out of 5 stars from Golf Digest, and in our earlier years, we hosted a US Amateur Qualifier. In 2009, we were the Detroit News Reader's Choice as #1 Golf Course in Michigan, and in 2010 we were listed in Golf World's Top 50 Public Courses Nationally. Also, later in the summer of 2012, we will be hosting the Golf Association of Michigan State Championship Tournament.
What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
I would have to say #18 is our signature hole. As you drive up the hill and approach the tee box, you will be struck with a breathtaking view of Lake Fisher and our wooden beam clubhouse in the distance. #18 will definitely test your golfing skills to the fullest, as you try to clear Lake Fisher with your tee-shot. Once you reach the green, your work isn't done as there is water short, long and left of the green. All around this is a great finishing hole.
What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
This would come down to our signature hole #18. From the breathtaking views, to the challenging shots that contest you off the tee and approach shot, this is one of the best finishing holes in Michigan. My tip for you would be to try to bite off as much as you can from the tee box. If you are able to cut off the corner of the lake slightly you will be rewarded with a closer approach shot. I have hit everything from a pitching wedge to a 5 iron into this green; it's all about placement off the tee.
Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
After your round, you have got to try one of our signature steaks, which are cut and cooked to order. All served with a garden salad, French bread, baked potato, and fresh vegetables.
As for the drink, I would recommend the McCarthy Manhattan, which is a family recipe from a good friend of our owners.
