Golf Pride MCC plus 4

Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 Golf Grips Review

Tour Pro Inspired

By David Theoret

When it comes to gripping a golf club, the formula is simple: larger lower hand + lighter grip pressure = MORE POWER! While the taper in most golf grips leads golfers to grip the club too tightly with their lower hand, Golf Pride has introduced a new grip with a reduced taper in the lower hand.

The new MCC plus 4 is just what the name implies - 4 extra wraps on the lower part of the grip. Rubber that is also 20% softer is used down here as well, giving golfers a softer feel in the gloveless hand. And, although it is not a proven fact, the thought is that a larger lower hand leads to less hooked shots.

Now that you've established lighter grip pressure, let me throw another formula at you: new, soft material + lighter grip pressure = PERFORMANCE FEEL. Golf Pride's new micro-texture is designed to give the MCC plus 4 a softer feel. The small, diagonal grooves and vertical cutouts channel moisture away, providing for more stability in the downswing.

While much of the hype of the new MCC plus 4 grip has to do with the lower hand, the upper hand has not been overlooked. A moisture-wicking brushed cotton cord in the upper hand promotes all weather control while offering a softer feel in a corded grip. This Brushed Cord Technology (BCT) offers the surface texture most top players prefer in damp or humid conditions.

By playing the new Golf Pride MCC plus 4 grips, you also benefit from using a consistent product. If you're a golfer that has built up the lower part of the grip in the past, Golf Pride has taken the guesswork out of being consistent. No more lining up those small pieces of tape and stacking them precisely one on top of the other. Now, just put the tape on the shaft and stick the grip on; it's that simple.

Golf Pride's contention that most players prefer a slightly larger grip with less taper in the lower hand is not unfounded. The majority of Tour players build up their grips in the lower portion to reduce tension in their hands. While the claim of added power and speed may be hard to prove (my testing showed minimal differences) one thing was obvious: these grips are a lot more comfortable. Also plain to see was that my lower hand was more relaxed and gripped the club lighter. It would be difficult to find a golf grip that combines superior traction and comfort as well as the MCC plus 4.

The new Golf Pride MCC plus 4 grips are available in three colors: red, blue and light gray and retail for around $9.50 each. With over 80% of Tour players around the world playing their grips - and not getting paid for it - Golf Pride has as about as firm a grip (pun intended) as one can have any one segment of the golf equipment market.

More information on the MCC Plus4 can be found on Golf Pride's website, www.golfpride.com.

For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher.
