Golf Course Review: Horseshoe Bay Golf Club

Well-maintained, challenging golf experience.

Get lulled into a sense of accomplishment on the first hole, but that feeling won't last. The number two doglegs right and requires an interesting risk/reward decision--play safe or ease your tee shot close to the water for a birdie attempt? Number three, par three, is doomsday for the chronic slicer--and he/she will get wet for sure. Four, for even the high handicapper, is a makeable par 5, just long enough to make your second shot selection interesting. The second par three of the front nine, number 5, requires a carry over rocks and thicket, but if it's not straight--oops, there's trouble both right and left. Number 6-a dogleg left-is another birdie opportunity, based on where you leave your tee shot. Seven and eight run along the rural road, with an elevated green on 7 tucked into the prairie, and trees guarding the green on the par 5 eighth. Nine is a blind shot into a fairway undulating into the green.

On the back nine, #10 starts out easy enough, unless your tee shot winds up in the almost-unplayable rough on the right. Eleven is another interesting shot, with elevation changes up to 15-20 feet from swale to teebox--and that doesn't include the trees! Twelve's hilly left side of the fairway is only slightly more desirable than the bunkers and heavy rough on the right. Thirteen is my personal favorite, with the choice to play either an upper or lower fairway into an elevated green (up-down-up-down makes you think you're in an elevator). Watch out for 14-don't try to retrieve your ball past the fence on the left side-it really is electrified (don't ask). Fifteen holds fond memories as my only Hole-in-One experience, but if you are fortunate enough to do the same, you probably won't see it happen. Sixteen is a bit of a rest before the final two. 17 is a par three, over-the-water, bunker-protected gem that tests any golfer's mettle. Then the signature hole, #18, into a spectacular view of Green Bay that can make the memory of even a bad round melt away.

Definitely worth the visit.
