The Max Mandel
Featured Destination: Laredo, Texas
The Max Mandel Municipal Golf Course
The Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course (also known as The MAX) occupies a 270-acre dream site along the Rio Grande River in Laredo, Texas. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and his team transformed a landscape that features two deep arroyos, a rich variety of mesquite trees and river vega flora into a spectacular 18-hole layout that has already captivated and attracted golfers from not only Texas and Mexico, but also outside the region. The challenging par-72 course caters to golfers of all ability levels, with five sets of tees available, including a dedicated "juniors" teeing area on each hole to increase enjoyment for family play.
The 9,000 square-foot hacienda style clubhouse sits high on the banks of the Rio Grande and it affords views of several holes. The clubhouse includes a fully stocked golf pro shop, a grill room offering excellent food and beverage, and a second level banquet facility.
First opened for play in late 2012, The MAX was recently named as one of "The Most Beautiful Courses in Texas" by GOLF Magazine. Other significant rating awards for The MAX include Golf Digest's designation as "One of the Best New Courses of 2013;" and Golfweek's listing in 2013 and 2014 as "One of the Best Municipal Courses in the U.S."
Oakcreek Country Club
Featured Golf Destination: Sedona, Arizona
Oakcreek Country Club
The premier of Sedona Arizona golf courses, the Oakcreek Country Club is an 18 hole championship golf course nestled in the majestic Sedona red rocks. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr., this Sedona, Arizona golf course is truly a masterpiece featuring Sedona red rock views beyond compare.
This Sedona, Arizona golf course is a traditional layout similar to those that you may find in the Midwestern United States. In the usual Trent Jones manner, the fairways are classic tree lined doglegs with fairway bunkers strategically placed in the landing areas, and the greens are all slightly elevated and surrounded with large swirling greenside bunkers. The golf course is "player friendly", allowing plenty of room for error but always with an opportunity to recover and get errant shots back into play.
Sequoyah National Golf Club
Featured Casino Golf Course: Sequoyah National Golf Club
Harrah's Cherokee Casino Near Asheville, North Carolina
Sequoyah National Golf Club is on the up! Sequoia Management - now a subsidiary of ClubCorp - took over the course in late October of 2014. With poor reviews, deteriorating course conditions, and unhappy customers, Sequoia Management has worked hard to bring Sequoyah National back to where it should be. Despite the cold winter, the course has seen dramatic improvements under the direction of a new General Manager and new Superintendent. By the time spring rolls in, management expects the course to be in excellent condition.
Located just a few miles from Harrah's Cherokee Casino, Sequoyah National Golf Club provides an opportunity for a fantastic golf getaway. Add in area hiking and fishing, the welcoming culture of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, and the central location to major cities like Charlotte, Asheville, and Atlanta, Cherokee has the recipe for a perfect weekend excursion.
