PING Nome TR Putter

A New Innovation in Putting

By David Theoret

PING is at it again, this time trying to revolutionize the putter industry. The Nome TR putter is one of the models that is using precision - variable-depth grooves, an innovation designed to create consistent ball speeds regardless of where the ball is struck on the face. The groves are deeper in the center and more shallow towards the outside, resulting in distance control that has not been seen before. In fact, the test results are better than anything PING has done before. The TR stands for true roll - and lives up to its billing.

According to John A. Solheim, Ping's Chairman and CEO Solheim added: "The combination of distance control, accuracy and extreme forgiveness will be exciting to golfers. Plus, they'll be able to optimize the fit by choosing a standard or adjustable-length shaft."

The Nome TR is a mallet-style putter, crafted from a high-grade aluminum frame and fully machined in Phoenix, AZ. The head is balanced with a tungsten-composite sole weighting system to optimize the center of gravity and raise the moment of inertia, making the Nome TR one of PING's highest-MOI models.

In order to simplify the aiming process, PING has added a white alignment bar with a contrasting black matte sightline. This makes make dialing your putt with the mallet-style head rather simple, which leads to a bolder, more confident stroke. The non-glare matte-black finish on the putter head makes it easier for golfers to distinguish between the alignment bar and sightline. Additionally, the black finish makes everything fade away, allowing you to concentrate on your alignment as you stand over the putt.

Also worth noting are the different shafts that are available. Three different shaft bends are available, giving PING the ability to fit any type of stroke: Straight, Slight Arc, and Strong Arc. This allows you to build a more consistent stroke and make more putts.

Something I had not seen in a putter before is a USGA/R&A-conforming adjustable-length shaft. For a little bit extra money, you can have a shaft that adjusts from 31 to 38 inches. The telescoping shaft has a lightweight stainless steel locking ring that you tighten using a proprietary PING wrench.
As advertised, I found distance control very easy with the PING Nome TR. It is well-balance and easy to take straight back and straight through. The sight alignment makes it easy to line the putt up and takes away the guess work. Just pick out your spot, take the putter back and stroke the ball. There's a pretty good chance you'll make it or, at worse get it close.

The Nome TR putter is available at all major golf retailers, both brick-and-mortar and online. The non-adjustable model is available in several different lengths, all priced around $279 USD. The adjustable model will set you back another $35. For more information on the PING Nome TR putter or any other great PING products, visit their website at www.ping.com.

David Theoret David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.

Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.

After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
