Cape Fear National Benefits from Use of Hybrid Bentgrass

Cape Fear National Benefits from Use of Hybrid Bentgrass

By Kate Smith

Golfers prefer Cape Fear National, not only because of the excellent design by award-winning golf architect, Tim Cate, but also because the course is carefully-maintained all year long. The greens are covered with A1/A4 hybrid bentgrass which golfers love because it provides a true putting surface.

Year-Round Play
A1/A4 bentgrass thrives in the fall and spring and is nurtured during the summer months by Cape Fear National Superintendent, Paul Hughes, and his staff. Along the fairways in March through April, the staff over-seeds with rye to ensure play on green grass throughout the winter months.

The Choice of Championship Courses
Bentgrass is the preferred grass for use on greens by many championship golf courses, including Augusta National. Players who have played Cape Fear National love how smooth and fast the greens are, while another advantage to using bentgrass is that it is hardier than Bermuda grass and can withstand more foot traffic.
