Reasons to visit and golf in Toledo

and The Arthur Hills Golf Trail

By Fred Altvater

Most golfers don't think of Toledo, Ohio, when they want to plan a golf trip for their next buddies or girl's golf getaway. With the initiation of the Arthur Hills Golf Trail, we thought it wise to explain why a golfer and his family would want to come to Toledo to enjoy not only great golf, but the plethora of activities for the entire family.

Toledo has long been an economic hub sitting between Detroit and Cleveland on Lake Erie. The Portage and Maumee Rivers flow through northwest Ohio to the Lake and the surrounding landscape is perfect for great golf, hiking and exploring. In addition, the cost for golf and other entertainment is well below national average.

The Inverness Club opened for play in 1903, has hosted four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, two U.S. Senior Opens, a U.S. Amateur, plus the NCAA Championship. It will play host to the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur and the 2021 Solheim Cup. The clubhouse is a veritable museum of golf and pays tribute to Byron Nelson, who was the Head Golf Professional at Inverness 1940-1944.

The Manor House at Wildwood Estate was the family home for the Stranahan family. Brothers R.A. and F.D. Stranahan founded the Champion Spark Plug company and used their unfathomable wealth to help the city through the depression and forge into the future. The mansion, as well as, the surrounding grounds have been preserved with tours available.

Stroll through the beautiful Toledo Botanical Gardens and enjoy 60 acres of nature's gorgeous handiwork. Sculptures and flower collections are strewn throughout the Garden Discovery Trail. Special stops are designed to engage children imaginations.

If you like a little fishing with your golf, Lake Erie is a fisherman's paradise with perch, walleye and various other species that look good fried up for dinner. In addition, the Maumee River is famous for the spring Walleye run. Fishermen come from across the nation to wade into the river and catch a prized walleye.
Highland Meadows Golf Club annually hosts the best LPGA Tour players for the Marathon Classic. Former champions include, Paula Creamer, Lydia Ko, Se Ri Pak and several others, who have gone on to win major championships.

The Toledo Zoo is over 100 years old and has been recognized as one of the best in the country. It houses over 9,000 species of animals, plus a newly revamped Aquarium featuring interactive exhibits and history of ocean life.
The internationally acclaimed Toledo Museum of Art houses 50 galleries within its six buildings. Collections include Greek, Asian, Egyptian and African artwork, as well as, medieval, modern and contemporary. Toledo's history as a center for glass work is celebrated in the museum, as well. The 36-acre site also includes gardens and sculptures.

Imagination Station in downtown Toledo is a family-friendly offering hands on science activities for kids of all ages. More than 250 exhibits feature interactive energy, water, agriculture, engineering and health activities.

History lovers will enjoy a chance to travel along one of the many canals that provided a transportation system for settlers of northwest Ohio. The Providence Metropark and Roche de Bouef park near Waterville celebrate the canal history in the area.

From April to September, the Mud Hens, a Triple AAA farm team of the Detroit Tigers, play at Fifth Third Field in a renovated downtown area, filled with a variety of dining and entertainment options.

Three venues, the Huntington Arena, is the home for the Toledo Walleye hockey team, plus the Stranahan and Valentine Theaters draw big-name acts and Broadway shows, as well as, other comedians and entertainers to Toledo.

A host of new micro-breweries serve some of the finest craft beers. The new Open Container District near the Huntington Arena and Fifth Third Field allows patrons to mingle outside and move about the various restaurants in the area.

A variety of dining options await visitors to Toledo. Enjoy a fine dining experience at local favorite Mancy's Steakhouse, or a hearty lunch at Tony Packo's, made famous by native-son Jamie Farr as, Corporal Max Clinger in the popular TV series M.A.S.H.

For the ladies the Franklin Park Mall, Levis Commons and The Shops at Fallen Timbers offer the best in shopping nirvana. Plus, Serenity Health & Wellness Center will help soothe those achy muscles after a day of strenuous shopping, or golf.

As you can see Toledo is ready and willing to accept golfers, as well as, other tourists to the many attractions in the area.
