U.S. Golf Writer Prepares for English Links & Coastal Golf Experience

By Mike May

WELLINGTON, FLORIDA - May 8, 2026 - If you write about it, they will come. That's the editorial attitude that Wellington, Florida-based golf/travel writer Mike May is taking as he prepares to travel to England in late May (May 26-31) to play golf in the counties of Devon and Cornwall, England's two most southwesterly counties. During his stay in Devon and Cornwall, May - who writes for more than a dozen different golf publications and website, as well as being the editor-in-chief of IndianaGolfJournal.com -- will play six golf courses in six days. Four of those golf courses will be authentic links golf courses that are part of England's Atlantic Links.

May's editorial golf trip to England will be his fourth to Great Britain since 2017. Currently, he has editorial affiliations with 14 golf publications and websites in the U.S. He serves as editor-in-chief of the Indiana Golf Journal and he's a correspondent with Golf Central Magazine, Ohio Golf Journal, Michigan Golf Journal, Southern Fairways Magazine, Midwest Golfing Magazine, GolfTrips.com, Golf One Media, New England Dot Golf, GolfDaily.com, Ignite Golf Network, NYGOLF Magazine, and Golf Destinations Magazine, and Golf Oklahoma.

"We are pleased to host Mike on this editorial tour through Devon and Cornwall," said Sally Everton, project director for Visit Devon. "Mike's proven qualities as a writer and his passion for golf are why we are delighted to have him as a guest at our golf courses in late May."

This editorial golf trip to England is a 'homecoming' of sorts for May who lived for four years in the late 1970s/early 1980s with his family in the seaside village of St. Ives, Cornwall. When May lived in St. Ives, his parents (Chris and Joanne May) co-owned and co-operated the Pedn-Olva Hotel in St. Ives from June 1977 to July 1981. It was in England, while playing golf at the nearby West Cornwall Golf Club in the village of Lelant, that May's interest in links golf was nurtured and blossomed. While in England, May completed his high school education at Truro School in Truro, Cornwall in July 1981. He, then, returned to the U.S. to attend the University of Florida, where he graduated from in May 1985.

May's trip through Devon and Cornwall will begin on Tuesday, May 26 when he arrives for a relaxing afternoon and a dinner at the Saunton Sands Hotel in Braunton in north Devon. This hotel is an iconic art deco property with panoramic views over the Saunton Golf Club's East and West courses. This hotel overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and a vast, golden sand-filled beach. The Saunton Sands Hotel's on-site seafood restaurant serves excellent cuisine.

On Wednesday, May 27, May will play the East course at the Saunton GC in the morning followed by an afternoon round in nearby Bideford at the Royal North Devon Golf Club, which is England's oldest links golf course. In existence since 1864, Royal North Devon is nicknamed Westward Ho! and was the home course for five-time (British) Open winner J.H. Taylor, back in the early 1900s. Both the Saunton GC and the Royal North Devon GC are built adjacent to the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

On Thursday, May 28, May will drive to north Cornwall for a late morning round at the St. Enodoc Golf Club in Rock, Cornwall. This golf course is listed in Golf Digest's World's 100 Greatest Golf Courses. The 18-hole Church Course at St. Enodoc overlooks the Camel Estuary which feeds into the nearby north Atlantic Ocean. The St. Enodoc GC is the home of the Himalayas bunker, which is the tallest sand bunker in Europe.

"To play St. Enodoc is a genuine thrill and will be a great experience," said May.

That evening, May will spend the first of two nights at the nearby Carlyon Bay Hotel in St. Austell. This resort hotel overlooks Cornwall's south coast, with direct access to St. Austell Bay. The Carlyon Bay Hotel is one of Great Britain's pre-eminent resort hotels.

On Friday, May 29, May will play 18 holes at the Carlyon Bay Golf Club and 18 more holes that afternoon at the nearby Trevose Golf & Country Club in Padstow. The Carlyon Bay Golf Club is referred to as a coastal golf destination. Perched high above the cliffs that tower over the Crinnis Beach and Shorthorn Beach, this golf course provides an enjoyable golf experience as you look out across the sprawling St. Austell Bay. Trevose has been described as England's most laid-back and coolest links golf destination. From any part of Trevose, you can always hear the sound of the surf crashing into the rocks along the nearby sea shore.

On Saturday, May 30, May will head back to Devon, specifically to Bovey Castle, an iconic 5AA Red Star luxury castle, and the Bovey Castle Golf Course, both of which are perched in the middle of Devon's Dartmoor National Park. May's 18-holes of golf at the Bovey Castle GC will be a stark contrast to the links golf he will have played earlier in the week. The Bovey Castle overlooks the stunning Edwardian gardens and the nearby River Bovey.
