Getting To Know: Thornberry Creek at Oneida

An Insightful Interview With Mark Becker, PGA, Director of Golf

By Brian Weis

Whether you have played a course 20+ times a year or looking to play the course for the first time, insights from an insider can help enhance your golf experience. Below is an interview with Mark Becker who shares some valuable tidbits about the course, memorable holes and must eats and treats at the 19th.

Give Our Readers An Overview of the Golf Course/Property
Thornberry Creek at Oneida sits on the second highest peak in Brown County. Majestic 27 holes of Championship golf with spectacular views and scenery. Located on Green Bay's west side, we are just 12 minutes from Lambeau Field! The clubhouse is a wopping 68,000 square feet and has 24 HDTV's for your post round enjoyment! Watch any game you want! Remember, the price of your first drink after your round is based on your golf score - a penny per stroke!

If Someone Was Looking To Golf In The Area, Why Should They Play Your Course?
The people and service! The golf course and clubhouse already speak for themselves in their grandness. The people make it that much greater! Bag drop service, complimentary range balls with your paid green fees, and the Leinie's Lodge located on the Championship Course - we have it all and great service with a smile! We also have 2 practice greens to work on your game and have 3 golf instructors on hand to help your game!

What Tips or Local Knowledge Would You Provide To Help Them Score Better At Your Course?
Hit it straight! Be sure to take a look at the scorecard for some tips for each hole. #1 is one of the toughest opening holes in the state! The course is full od bunkers, trees and water, so there is never a dull moment!

Recent Awards or What You Are Most Proud About The Course?
We have been voted Best of the Bay for Favorite Golf Course every year since 2006. We have hosted numberous WPGA Pro-Ams and State Open Qualifiers, as well as many WSGA Net Partner tournaments.
We have also been awarded, "Best Golf Shop Service Award" in 2011 from The Golf Course Owners Association of Wisconsin!

What Is The Signature, Most Talked About, or Most Photographed Hole?
This is a tough one because we have 5-6 great holes that people tend to talk about most. #1 is a great opening hole, dogleg right. #18 is also a tough finishing hole to an elevated green with the huge clubhouse as a back drop. The par 5, 13th has 13 large bunkers throughout the hole - awesome! The par 5 #15 is the classic risk-reward hole to go for it in 2. I haven't even mentioned the fantastic par 3 holes yet!

Come on out and try 'em all!

What Is Your Favorite Hole? Any Tips to Play It?
I love #9. It reminds me of Doral - the Blue Monster. Water runs all the way along the left side on this par 5. Only a few big hitters can get there in 2. Be aware of the narrowing fairway as you get closer to the green! Water on left, bunkers on the right!

Must Have Dish or Drink after the round at the 19th Hole?
Remember, your first drink is your golf score - a penny per stroke! So all the drinks are a favorite. Just try to keep it under $1.00!

We have great burgers and wraps, but are best known for our wood-fired pizzas!

Who Holds Course Record and What Was Their Score?
Many different stories on this out here. Apparently someone shot a 64 out here back in '03 or '04. Don't know for sure. Therefore, come on out and post a low score - you just may become the new course record holder!

About: Brian Weis

Brian Weis Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.

As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.

Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.

In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.

On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.

Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
